History tells us that the very first bathtub in America brought with it a host of objections. Objections to a bathtub? Let’s just say many of the day had little sense, but a lot of scents!
The first bathtub was installed by Adam Thompson of Cincinnati in 1842. It was encased in mahogany and lined with sheet metal. It was seven feet long, four feet wide and weighed 1,750 pounds.
The doctors in Cincinnati decided that bathing was dangerous. Soon the politicians picked up the fight. One neighboring state levied a $30.00 a year tax on bathtubs. Some water suppliers increased the water rates for people who had a bathtub. And so the controversy raged for years.
There were many misconceptions just like this one in the 1800’s. But guess what? Today there are still numerous misconceptions and false conclusions inside and outside the doors of the Church.
So where do we get answers when it comes to our spiritual life? Do we get them from Mom and Dad? Grandma and Grandpa? The Pastor? James 1:5 says “If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God that gives to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him.” Did you hear that? We have an invitation from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to get the story from the One who knows. Awesome!
You may have questions about doctrines and how to live your life. God says “Search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and they are they which testify of Me.” (John 5:39) You may have questions about relationships or some family conflicts. God says “…but they that seek the Lord understand all things.” (Proverbs 28:5) You may have questions about prophecy and last day events. God says “Blessed is he that reads and they that hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written therein.” (Revelation 1:3) You may have a sincere desire to grow and have a deeper understanding of spiritual things. God says “As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the Word that you may grow thereby.” (1 Peter 2:2)
You’ll notice that with each of the above promises that there were three important components. There is 1) You, 2) an active effort of searching and 3) God. Mom and Dad aren’t in there. Grandma and Grandpa aren’t in there. Not even the Pastor is mentioned in activating these promises. WE have to SEE IT! WE have to UNDERSTAND it! WE have to DIGEST it! WE have to EXPERIENCE it! There are no shortcuts. But once we have it, WE HAVE IT! And a whole lot more too! We have an assurance that cannot be shaken, we have a faith with deeper roots and we have a peace just because WE KNOW!
Take time today to shake the tree of His Word until it rains GLORY in your heart! You won’t come away disappointed. The TRUTH will set you free!
