”Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.” (Genesis 6:11-12) This sounds like this could be headlines in a current Christian newspaper. Our world is just brimming with violence and corruption.
God instructed Noah to build an Ark of safety. He said, “This is how you are to build it: the ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the ceiling and make lower, middle and upper decks.” (Genesis 6:15-16)
So here we have a worldwide crisis that affected every man, woman and child. In an effort to preserve mankind, God instructs Noah to build an ark. And while He was giving Noah the huge dimensions of this ship, He specifies that a tiny window should be constructed in the ceiling. Why? That would be like staking out the dimensions for a large home and mentioning the shower drain all in the same breath.
God did not instruct Noah to build windows in the sides of the ark to view the corruption of the earth outside, and to eventually view the turmoil of the raging waters. God instructed him to build a window in the ceiling of the ark for a specific reason…to keep Noah and his family looking UP!
Similarly, the Seventh day Sabbath is the window in the week that keeps us looking up! God knew that Satan would wage a war against the spirituality of every man, woman and child. He knew that the evil one would little by little draw people away from their Creator to where spirituality was of little or no value. That’s why God says “REMEMBER the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…” (Exodus 20:8-10) In essence He says, “My relationship with you is so important to Me, I created the Sabbath to preserve it. It’s there to safeguard the bond between Me and you…to keep it from being swept away into the details of life. It’s an emphasis of what I value and esteem as MOST important!”
Additionally, as individuals we need for life to come to a screeching halt. We need to turn our attention away from the hurricanes, the wars, the famines, tsunamis and earthquakes. We need to focus on the goodness of our God, the revelations of His glory and the brightness of the future we have with Him. It is a refreshing and much needed REST!
What a tenderhearted God we serve! Undoubtedly the Lord again demonstrates that we are A number one with Him in giving us this weekly window to keep our eyes and hearts pointed heavenward!
Do you want to feel loved today by the King of the universe? Close yours eyes and take ten minutes just to think about this weekly date God set aside for YOU and HIM. Think about how He is drawing you away from the insignificant details of life into a more meaningful walk with Him. Think about His Holiness, His Majesty and His honorable position in the universe…and how much YOU mean to Him this second!
