As long as I live I will never forget an incident that happened when my daughter was about 16... when the ink on her drivers license was still wet! Alyssa and a friend cleaned the buildings at 3ABN in the evenings, and this one particular evening she went into town and picked up Crystal for “housekeeping duty.” About 10:00pm Alyssa called me on the phone and said, “we’re finished with the cleaning and I’m going to take Crystal home now.” Although I was tired and ready to go to bed, somehow I found myself saying, “Well honey, why don’t you come and pick me up and I’ll ride with you.” I didn’t know why I said it, I just said it. So a short time later I found myself traveling down the highway with two chattering teenagers.
For some reason I had an uneasy feeling when I got into the car so I started to pray, and while the girls chattered, I continued to pray. We were about halfway to Crystal’s house when all of a sudden Alyssa reached into the back seat to grab something, and as she did her car swung off the road and caught the gravel. I yelled, “Watch out!” When she saw what was happening she turned the wheel sharply to get back on the road. Then, for what seemed like an eternity, she swung the car from the left to the right several times to get control of the car again. But God heard my prayer. She finally got the car back between the painted lines of the highway, and we all heaved sighs of relief. I was convinced that it was the angels that kept us from a bad accident that night. I was also convinced that the Holy Spirit prompted me to ride along with the girls and start praying just at the right time.
Folks, the good news is the Spirit doesn’t just want to talk to us in life-threatening situations. He wants to talk to us every day in every circumstance...because He loves us THAT much! I can’t begin to tell you how many times the Spirit has prompted me to pray, urged me to go, impressed me to speak, or told me to pick up the phone and make a certain call. Then I find out later, it was right on target... music to my ears, so to speak! God is so good! Probably the single most important thing I have ever learned is that the most vital enterprise I can do each and every day is simply “listen” for the sweet Holy Spirit. The Spirit sees what I can’t see, and the Spirit knows what I don’t know, and best of all the Holy Spirit wants to tell me what He sees and knows so I know what I need to do. And this is what He wants for you, me and everyone on the face of the earth. It’s an incredible blessing! And folks, think about it, if we belong to Christ, our lives are not about what we want to do and what we want to be, it’s all about what God needs to do through us. So we need to learn to become good listeners. And our number one task every day needs to be... listening! Because we’re only going to accomplish good things today when it’s “Not by might, not by power but by His Spirit.” It’s the only way!
Luke 2:27 says, “And He came by the Spirit to the temple...” Then Luke 4:1 says,“And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit to the wilderness.” Jesus depended on the Spirit to tell Him where to go and what to do, and if Jesus did it, that means it’s the best possible way to operate. It’s the best way to find direction for your life, it’s the best way to find healing for your life, it’s the best way to turn on the heavenly faucet for blessings to come into your life and the lives of your families, and it’s just the best way to enjoy life to the fullest! And Christians, listen to this. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” So as a blood-bought, born-again child of God, being led by the Spirit of God is part of your inheritance! It’s part of the great privilege of being a Christian.
There’s a precious story in the scriptures where Solomon, just recently appointed as king, prayed earnestly to God. He very much felt the weight of his new responsibilities of being the leader of a whole kingdom and he knew He needed help...not just help, DIVINE help. So he prayed not for power, not for wealth, not for influence... he prayed for “an understanding heart.” (1 Kings 3:9) The word “understanding” in the original Hebrew language is “shama” which means “to hear.” King Solomon knew the most important gift he could request was a “listening” heart! God’s voice was music to his ears!
Do you feel on top of the world, or is the world on top of you? Are you caught up in the rush of life, running this way and that way, and in all the running you’ve lost your peace? Well, don’t give up, because God hasn’t given up on you. And if you’re ready to listen, He’s got lots to tell you and there’s nothing He wants better to do than help lead your life in a direction where you’ll be happier and more blessed and fulfilled. In fact he’s made it a promise... a promise with your name on it. “Blessed is the man that hears Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.” (Proverbs 8:34) And folks it’s true, “The hills are alive (or anywhere else you happen to be) with the sound of music.” God’s music!
