A Measure of LOVE

A little over 100 years ago that there was no such thing as measuring cups and measuring spoons. This indeed was a Betty Crocker nightmare!! If you gave a neighbor a recipe it definitely would not turn out like the recipe you thought you were giving to your neighbor. The recipe for cupcakes could very well turn out to be pancakes!

Many people just think of Fanny Farmer as a box of chocolates, but Fanny Farmer was a lady who graduated from the Boston Cooking School in the 1880's. She was pretty upset with the fact that the recipes of the day would say “a nut of butter, or a spoon of molasses, or a glass of flour,” because obviously there are all different sizes of nuts and glasses and spoons. Yet Fanny Farmer changed all that when in 1896 she published the “Boston Cooking-School Cook Book. In this cookbook she insisted on bringing precision to the kitchen through the use of standardized measurements, and as a result she eliminated a lot of catastrophes in the kitchen. Her contribution literally changed how the world cooked! Now Fanny Farmer is now considered to be the mother of level measurements.

I never met Fanny Farmer, but I’m happy to say that I am privileged to have met the One who measures not just the small things, but the gigantic things like the sky and the oceans and the heavens. Isaiah 40:12 says “God has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand and marked off the heavens with a nine-inch span, and enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance.” As human beings we’re in the practice of measuring the small things, but God is in the practice of measuring the HUGE things. And one of the biggest things in a human being that God measures is described in this thought penned by Ellen White. “The Lord measures the spirit and rewards accordingly and the pure, humble, childlike spirit of love makes the offering precious in His sight.” {R & H, July 3, 1894)

How big is your spirit today? Do you have a heart for those that God loves or are you all caught up in the rush of your own life? I guarantee if you’re caught up in the rush of your own life things aren’t running the way you want them to, and even if things on the outside look pretty good, things on the inside aren’t so good. It’s a fact of life. If we are all wrapped up in ourselves, we’re going to be some pretty unhappy people. But rather God wants us to be wrapped up in the things He cares about, which namely is people. And when we examine the issue a little closer we discover that this is ultimately the secret of living the most blessed and happy life on this earth. This is a fringe benefit that’s talked about in 1 Thessalonians 4:1 where it says “Furthermore then we beseech you brethren and exhort you by the Lord Jesus that as you have received of us how you ought to walk and to please God, so you will abound more and more.” AWESOME!! Do you want your life to abound more and more? Simply care about the things God cares about and function in that mode, and remember, God’s Word cannot fail! But to me the ultimate blessing is this. When we take time to make somebody’s else’s day we are really are making God’s day because we’re loving those that He loves. And it’s an incredible thing to make the day of the God of the universe.

God designed us as human beings to run on Himself. When we are functioning as we should, we’re nothing less than movers, shakers and givers!! And what’s so cool is that we all move, shake and give in a variety of different ways! “Every man (not just a few) shall give as he is able according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.” And Jesus said “Freely you have received, freely give.” So why not take a few minutes today to ask Jesus what you can do to make His day today? I’m going to sign off today with my Fanny Farmer inspired poem.

Do you want to make a difference
In someone’s life today?
Just bake a loaf of bread
‘Cause it has so much to say.

It says “I have the time for you.”
It says “I really care.”
It says “You can depend on me,
To keep you in my prayers.”

That little loaf of bread
With the blessing of the Lord
Can open up the distant heart
Where hurts and fears are stored.

Don’t leave it for tomorrow
The chance may slip away
Let God use that little loaf of bread
To reach someone today!
